We’re all capable of spotting a red wiggly line under a typo or checking a spelling online. But there’s so much more to achieving accurate, easy-to-read, consistent text.
If you’ve spent a lot of time on a project, chances are you’ll be a bit too familiar with it to spot any errors. And you’ve probably got more interesting, pressing or profitable things to do than worry about punctuation or check if that name was spelled the same three pages earlier. That’s why it’s so useful to have your text looked over by a fresh pair of eyes before it heads out the door.
Here’s a broad outline of what I will do if you hire me to look at your copy:
Check for any spelling, grammar or punctuation errors
Check that the text is consistent throughout (names, formatting, etc.)
Make sure it adheres to any required house style or formatting
Highlight all corrections in the way most convenient to you
Work in the format that suits you, such as Word, PDF or Final Draft
You can rest assured that I’ve got all the required training behind me - I’m a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), and have a Distinction in Proofreading from The Publishing Training Centre. (I also have a LOT of grammar books – because, let’s face it, no one can remember everything...)
Katie is talented, creative, knowledgeable, quick and has an attention to detail I have not experienced before. She understands the global TV market, and her copy always strikes the perfect note for our target audience, maximising the potential of our titles.
We might live in an increasingly image-focused world, but it still takes words to convert interest into action. The trouble is, we're constantly bombarded by information, so to navigate this daily onslaught, we’ve developed the attention span of a magpie in a jewellery shop.
Whether you're looking to announce your latest news, promote your business, boost sales or position yourself as an expert in your field - the words you use need to shine. Fresh, original copy with just the right amount of personality and a lack of jargon or waffle will stop your reader wandering off to examine something that shines brighter.
Below are just a few of the copy requirements I can help with, including some specific to the television industry. If you don’t see what you’re looking for listed here, get in touch and I’ll let you know if I can help.
Katie can quickly create an accurate and effective story that concisely delivers our message, is in keeping with our brand image and grabs the attention of our target audience.
It’s essential to ensure that your copy works for you and your target reader. It should be the correct length, well structured, accurate, consistent and written in a style and tone that suits its platform, purpose and audience.
I wouldn’t consider myself to be a ‘traditional’ copyeditor, i.e. preparing books or manuscripts for publishing. My expertise lies more in working with businesses to edit their text for its required purpose.
Perhaps you have copy that needs editing to be more concise or to suit a new platform. Or you have a first draft and would like someone to check its structure, tone and consistency. You could be preparing marketing materials for a TV show that originated in a non-English-speaking territory and need to optimise any translated copy.
Whatever your requirement, if your words need a wash and brush up, get in touch.
We regularly call upon Katie’s expertise in creative copywriting, proofing and editing. Her knowledge of the way we position our shows in the marketplace means we can rest assured that any project Katie works on is always delivered on deadline and exactly as per our brief.
