We’re all capable of spotting those little red wiggly lines under a spelling mistake or typing a word into Google to check it’s correct. But there’s so much more to achieving accurate, easy-to-read, consistent text.


If you’ve spent a lot of time on a project, chances are you’ll be a bit too familiar with it to spot any errors. And you’ve probably got more interesting, pressing or profitable things to think about than where to put that comma, if it should be effect or affect, or if that name was spelled the same three pages earlier. That’s why it’s so useful to have your text looked over by a fresh pair of eyes before it heads out the door.


Here’s a broad outline of what I will do if you hire me to look at your copy:



Check for any spelling, grammar or punctuation errors

Check that the text is consistent throughout (names, formatting, etc.)

Make sure it adheres to any required house style or formatting

Highlight all corrections in the format that suits you, as agreed in advance

You can rest assured that I’ve got all the required training behind me - I’m a Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) and have a Distinction in Proofreading from The Publishing Training Centre. (I also have a LOT of grammar books and a very big dictionary – because, let’s face it, no-one can remember everything...)

We might live in an increasingly image-focused world, but it still takes words to convert that initial spark of interest into action. I wouldn’t consider myself to be a ‘traditional’ copy-editor, i.e. preparing books or manuscripts for publishing. My expertise lies more in working with businesses to edit their text for its required purpose.
